From the mud of Mukono to the global stage - the remarkable journey of Soft Ground Wrestling Uganda

2023 March 16

The Beginning

Soft Ground Wrestling was founded by Daniel Bumba, a local resident of Mukono District who worked as a quantity surveyor turned television presenter. The idea was simple yet revolutionary - create a wrestling promotion that would give Ugandan youth an opportunity to showcase their talent and build careers in sports entertainment.

The first matches were held on a rudimentary setup - a wrestling ring made from mud, surrounded by nylon ropes held together by bamboo posts. This humble beginning would give the promotion its distinctive name and character.

Despite this setback, SGW persevered and continued operations, demonstrating the resilience of the Ugandan wrestling community.

The incident highlighted the challenges of operating an independent wrestling promotion in Uganda but also showed the determination of those involved.

Present Today

A Global Movement

Soft Ground Wrestling Uganda has become a must-watch attraction for tourists visiting Uganda, both local and international visitors flock to Mukono to witness the unique spectacle of wrestling on the soft ground. The promotion continues to train new talent, host events, and inspire wrestling fans around the world.

What started as a dream in a muddy field has become a global phenomenon, proving that passion, determination, and authenticity can overcome any obstacle.

The Soft Ground Philosophy

The name "Soft Ground Wrestling" comes from the promotion's original ring - a bare ground surrounded by nylon ropes and bamboo posts. This unique setup, born from necessity, became the defining characteristic of SGW's identity.

Unlike traditional wrestling promotions that use spring-loaded rings, SGW's soft ground provides a completely different wrestling experience. The soft surface absorbs impact differently, requiring wrestlers to adapt their techniques and creating a unique style of wrestling found nowhere else in the world.

Even after acquiring a proper wrestling ring, SGW maintains its connection to the soft ground through special events like Mud Mania, honoring their roots while embracing growth and professionalism.
